Foods and drinks increase risk of pancreatic cancer
– Red meat: Eating meat, at least conventionally-raised meat, increases pancreatic cancer risk. A study of researchers from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland, US, shows that who ate high amounts of saturated animal fat had a 36 percent higher rate of pancreatic cancer compared with those who ate low amounts. However, fat found in vegetables was not associated at all with cancer of the pancreas.
– Potato: Highly cooked potatoes are known to contain cancer-causing carcinogens as well. It is associated with roughly a 100 percent increased risk of developing the disease.
– Soda: Researchers from the University of Minnesota suggest that drinking more than one sweetened soft drink per week may significantly increase your risk of pancreatic cancer. The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing the level of insulin in the body and contributing to pancreatic cancer cell growth. Other researches also reveal that sugar may accelerate the growth of some tumors, which rely more heavily on glucose than other bodily cells.
– Alcohol: Heavy alcohol consumption, specifically three or more glasses of liquor a day, is associated with an increased risk of death from pancreatic cancer. Moreover, it is also causally related to several cancers, including oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, colorectum and female breast.
Foods reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer
– Fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables have been shown to reduce cancer risk, as have vitamin E, vitamin C, and potassium. Berries and onions slash pancreatic cancer risk by up to 59 Percent.
– Whole grains: Whole grain is believed better than more refined and sweetened grains for pancreatic cancer prevention. Eating a diet high in wide variety of grains can cut risk of pancreatic cancer by 40%. It also helps in prevention of diabetes and heart disease.
