Symptoms & Signs
The infection or irritation may cause the tissues to become inflamed and occasionally form ulcers. Symptoms may include:
- Difficulty swallowing
- Painful swallowing
- Heartburn (acid reflux)
- Oral lesions (herpes)

The doctor may perform the following tests:
- Upper GI x-ray with barium
